We celebrated Valentine’s day at Mess Up The Mess with the first Community Technical Volunteer training day of the year.
Ten volunteers spent the day in the Pensioner’s Hall in Ammanford learning the basics of stage management, theatre lighting and sound design. To start the day we looked at how stage mangers organise rehearsals and the best way of getting information to a cast. We also learnt about health and safety and how to risk assess a theatre event. Then we split into a lighting team and a sound team for the rest of the day.
The lighting team worked on designs to music. We chose music that reflected our volunteers’ wide range of tastes including a love of disco and punk rock! We learnt about the different lanterns and the different effects that we can create with them, as well as how to rig them safely. We definitely took advantage of the coloured gels and flashing effects on the lighting desk in our final show back.
The sound team worked on a very atmospheric opening to a play, complete with deafening gunshots and moody weather effects. We learnt about programming sound effects in CueLab so the whole sequence could be cued by just pressing one button. We also set up the sound system and learnt about balancing live sound, experimenting with different microphones to get the best sound.
A big thanks to our technical experts Matt Jones and Mohit Basudev, who worked with us all day, and to all our volunteers for your enthusiasm and teamwork. Looking forward to working with you on all sorts of projects this spring and summer.
There are still places on the Technical Volunteer Project. As well as attending one of our training days, you will also get to work on an Agored Level 2 Qualification in Volunteering and Community Engagement and help us put on great theatre and events in Carmarthenshire and beyond!
