Strangers No More

The Film created by young people from Mess Up the Mess and young people from the Ethnic Youth Support Team in Swansea. This film was inspired by the poem they wrote.

Over days they created the poem with mentoring from our writer Dafydd James and then made a film based on the poem with our Digital Artist Carolina Vasquez.

Well Done to everyone involved!

Message from Dafydd our Strangers 2 writer. Where next?

I just wanted to write a note to say how excited I was to receive the script documentation from Australia. It’s really taken on a life of its own. I’ve found so much of the dialogue, staging and thematic explorations inspiring and am really thrilled about the way discussions are happening between countries, between characters, across themes. Trans-national devising it seems is the way forward!
And on top of this all the great videos being posted by our friends in Hong-Kong and the work that I get to witness first-hand by the young people here in Wales. It’s certainly been an incredibly stimulating journey of creation along the way.
Just to let you guys know that in December I will be exploring all the material and working hard to find a satisfying structure to bring these ideas to life in a play, which I am going to draft before Christmas. It’s also great that Sarah will be able to share this work in progress with you face to face in the new year, as well our colleagues in New Zealand who will be joining the project.
So it seems an even more exciting journey lies ahead of us… thank you all of you so far for your fantastic contributions along the way.
Dafx

Strangers No More

Gazing through the windows of the world:
Fleeting intimacies,
So far, and yet so near.

Chatting, meeting,
Facebook greeting.

The world is resting in our hands:
Fragile bird,
Shake it, break it.

All different, all equal,
Communication across our nations,
Connecting cultures.

The eyes are everywhere,
The wide world is being watched:
Capital, corruption, control.

Google maps,
Bird’s eye view.

Google map the Amman Valley,
You may see my face,
But do you always see me?

We can always see you.
Barcode Britain…

Stealing secrets,
Stealing biometrics.
The pointing fingers of cameras scan me,
But I am not an item,
I have a right to privacy,
You have no right to sell me.
How can I be a stranger
When they know my DNA code?
Enclosed by countless pairs of eyes
They catch me in their blinking gaze.

Gazing through the windows of the world.
But do you really see me?

The wide world is watching but do you really see me?
