Techin’ It Live is an intensive technical theatre course, based around a production simulation exercise. 23 Participants took part in a single day taster where they took part in a range of different technical disciplines.
They then signed up to join one of 5 technical teams:
- Stage Management
- Lighting design
- Sound design
- Film / Video / Projection
- Set / Props / Costume Design and Making
Over 5 days, in the Easter vacation, tutored and mentored by industry professionals, 27 young people worked on a simulated production, using the full facilities of Pontardawe Arts Centre. They followed a specially written script called The Frog Queen, which was designed to challenge and test each technical discipline and stretch the participants’ creativity. They worked with a Director and a small company of young actors throughout the week. On the final day, they practised their skills in 2 performances of the show in front of a live (invited) audience of over 100 people. The process was as close a simulation of professional production conditions as possible, and in addition to gaining skills, it gave the participants a real flavour of what working in the industry could mean for them.
